Free Bob Book Worksheets

This is a growing set of worksheets that I am creating to use with my child as he reads the popular Bob Books series. Bob books are amazing first readers geared to children in PreK through 1st grade! Children love the cute silliness involved in each book. Parents and teachers love them because they are easy to use! I love using Bob Books because they teach systematically. Each book introduces one or more grapheme (spelling of a sound). A few books simply review what has been taught. This makes it easy for children to learn and understand the rules of phonics. Systematic reading instruction is part of the science of reading. If you are familiar with Scarborough's Reading Rope, Bob Books focus mainly on the word recognition section. You can purchase Bob Books from many stores. I have also seen them at 2nd hand shops, in super markets, and on Amazon for sale. The website to purchase them is Bobbooks.com*. Our local library owns a lot of them as well!

I have created a free set of worksheets for each book. These worksheets were designed to bring more clarity and attention to the new skills practiced in each book. Each group of Pre-Reading Worksheets prepares children for reading the specified book. Phonological awareness, decoding, and sight recognition are the focal point. There are also Post-Reading Worksheets that give children more practice with skills taught in that specified book and previous books in the Bob Book collection.

Is this a curriculum?

This is designed to be a huge resource of supplemental phonics instruction that can go along with a Language Arts Curriculum of your choice. These worksheets focus on phonics. The Bob Books focus on phonics. Many phonics curriculums that I have used do not give enough practice, so homeschool parents, teachers, or tutors have to find supplementary resources. I chose Bob Books because there are so many decodable books and because they seem to be available in many stores and libraries. My kindergartener uses these books and worksheets along with other Language Arts Curriculum. I guess the best answer is that can be used as a supplemental curriculum.

Is my child ready to read Bob Books and complete these worksheets?

Your child is ready to complete these worksheets and read the Bob Books that go with them when he or she can identify almost all the capital and lowercase letters and know most of each letter's sound. If your child does not know this yet, you could buy the My First Bob Books on Bobbooks.com. My First Bob Books are excellent books to introduce letters and the sounds they represent. They include a Pre-Reading Skills and an Alphabet book. You can also check out the free resources below.

I have also created a capital and lowercase craft for each letter to go with each season. I have Spring ABC Crafts, Summer ABC Crafts, Fall ABC Crafts, and Winter ABC Crafts.

There is also a Matching Capital and Lowercase Letter Printable on my website. Each match has a picture to go with that letter to help teach letter sounds.

How do I teach my child the letter sound, if the letter represents more than one sound?

Vowels, G, and C can be tricky to teach sounds because they represent more than one sound. I taught my child that vowels generally represent the short sound for beginning reader books. I taught this by saying, "Letter A represents the short a sound like apple when you read for now, but you also know that letter A represents long a sound for airplane too. Later you will read words with the long a sound." I also teach that C represents the K sound like cat for now. G represents the sound like in goat for now. This is just an easy way to get around learning too many phonics rules too fast. If you are using a systematic approach to teaching reading with lots of review, your child will learn the phonics rules at an appropriate time. In the Bob Book worksheets, there are pages with list of words. Each word appears twice. The word appears once with dots under each letter, and the same word appears again with an arrow under it. What do the dots and arrow mean?

When a new word is introduced in the worksheets, each word is printed twice. The same word is next to the same word. You will notice that the first time you see the word, it has a dot under each letter or group of letters. This is the time to break the word apart and focus on each grapheme's sound. Next you will see the word again with an arrow under the entire word. This is the time for putting all the sounds together to say the word. You will have to help your child do this at first, but each time you practice, your child will get better! Don't be afraid to review this section over several days or weeks until your child becomes comfortable reading each word.

We started these worksheets (or another curriculum), but now my child is stuck. He can't seem to understand the next concept. Do we keep moving on?

This is normal. This happens a lot for my child! I believe that a LOT of language arts curriculum moves too fast in phonics for most children. That was one of the reasons why I created these worksheets. These worksheets provide a ton of supplemental phonics instruction for free.

Next, I want to encourage you that you know your child best. You know what phonics concepts he or she is struggling with. Is it knowing letter sounds or blending sounds to create words or a new digraph? Try to make whatever concept is troubling fun, and try to keep your child feeling confident. It is okay to take a break on a new phonics concept and review previous concepts that your child knows well to build confidence. If your child is confident, his brain will be better suited to absorbing new material. Slow and steady wins the race. Fast and overwhelmed leads to giving up.

If you need more material, you can simply google search the concept that gives trouble. ThisReadingMama.com* and TheMeasuredMom.com* are both amazing websites with lots of helpful information that I have used when my child was struggling. You could also practice by spelling with magnetic letters, letter blocks, or markers and marker boards. You could have your child spell with finger paints or with play dough.

My child fusses every time we work on reading. What do I do?

There are several reasons a child might be fussing, but I would guess your child might be overwhelmed. I cannot diagnose that problem, but I can give a few suggestions to try!

1. Make sure you have a predictable reading time. Children thrive when they know what to expect. Our reading time is after morning snack. I chose this time, because my kids are fed and not tired. We always read in the living room. There's no argument about where or when we are going to read.

2. Keep it relaxing, but state and enforce expectations! Let your little one cuddle in your lap while reading, but there will be no tickling. Eyes have to look at the book while a finger moves to each word as it is read.

3. Create a reward system. My children get to color a circle a chart each time they read a book. Then they brag to dad or grandparents about how many circles they have colored.

4. Keep it on your child's level. I would definitely suggest to err on the easier side. Give lots of praise for effort!

5. Be patient and give praise. Reading is hard! Your little child's brain has to look at a letter, translate that letter to a letter sound, look at the next letter(s) in the word, translate those to letter sounds, put those letter sounds together to make a correct word, and comprehend that word's meaning while not forgetting the meaning of all of the other words made up of multiple letters he has read before in the book!
